About Lena Vargas Afanasieva
Lena is an illustrator based in Santo Domingo city. Born from a russian mother and a dominican father, she grew up with a mix of both cultures and her inclination towards art was clear from a young age. The magical russian fairytale stories and the bright colourful dominican culture influence her art to this day.
After getting a bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Graphic Design, Lena has worked as an art director in Young & Rubicam Damaris, DBG Havas Worldwide and Pages BBDO, where she had the opportunity to get the needed experience and skills to manage big projects, working with different teams and even winning several awards, one of them a bronze in Cannes Festival.
Trying to escape the system, in 2015 Lena became a freelancer, an important step that (unknowingly) triggered her transition from a designer to an illustrator. She kept working on advertising and graphic design until 2016, when she started exploring illustration and ended up discovering that it filled her more than anything else she had worked on before. Now, Lena has steered her career completely towards illustration, and has already worked with clients in different countries like US, Canada, England, Germany, Spain and now Dubai.
