About

About | This introductory class will focus on two different modes of letterform creation: writing and drawing. Participants will begin with a series of observational drawing exercises using only pencil and paper before moving onto calligraphic exercises with brush pen, and blackletter alphabets with balsa wood and ink. The final part of the class will focus on conceptualising and refining a custom piece of hand-lettering under Gemma’s instruction.

This course is designed to give participants a broad understanding of the principles of letterform creation through demonstrations of techniques used by Gemma O’Brien in her own practice. Through experimentation, one-on-one guidance, and critical discussion among peer, participants will leave with a set of tools and techniques to continue to explore hand lettering at home.

About the talk

For Gemma O’Brien, what started as a passion for the history and discipline of typography has shifted towards an interest in all forms of writing that represent the diversity of human experience. The growing demand for commercial commissions of hand-crafted lettering and calligraphic brush work sparked an interest to look deeper into the lure of the handmade and the value of authenticity in a digital age. Gemma O’Brien will discuss these observations by drawing upon experiences from her path to becoming a letterer and artist.
